Instead of seeing the picture of a birthday cake the child may notice a different style of printing or a pattern of numbers on the top of the sheet. It is not uncommon to see these children perseverate, drawing the same picture several times during the day over an extended period of time. One of the children we worked with was so obsessed with trains that he insisted on having his father draw him a picture of a specific type of train every time he ate. When he was at a table activity every drawing or journal entry was of a train.

But it also leads to difficulties in the child’s ability to develop reasoning skills which help to navigate social situations. It has been said that emotional thinking, an important skill which typically develops between two-and-a-half and three-and-a-half years, comes from the child being able to make connections between different events/actions and feelings (Greenspan 1992). ” This ability to connect actions to feelings also helps children predict consequences – for example, if I push John because I am mad then my teacher won’t let me go out to recess.

However, are the child’s social needs being served by that situation? It may be that the child retreats and can occupy himself easily by doing tasks of his choice but he isn’t interacting with, or being challenged to engage, other children. There is a place for this type of setting in a child’s life. Many children, after a full day of school with all its various demands, welcome unstructured down time (watch TV, play with favorite toy). Like all children, children with Asperger’s Syndrome often need time to recoup or to just be part of a group without the pressures to engage.
